Our prehistoric ancestors placed themselves in accord with the rhythm of Life by surrendering to the consciousness of the body. This surrender to body consciousness allowed the natural expression of libido to fuel their full participation in the passion play of Life.
While still sourced within these primal origins, the expression of libido has been refined and differentiated through eons of human experience. While known by culturally-specific names – including kundalini, duende, salka, chi – libido is the animating force that originally gave birth to many body-based disciplines such as yoga, folk and traditional dance and song, acupuncture, laying-on-of-hands, reiki and other energy techniques, qigong, tai chi and others.
Since access to this primary energy of life resides within the tissues and fibres of the human body, it is the birthright of every human being. However, very early in our lives, many of us began to esteem the consciousness of the mind over the consciousness of the body. We used our mind to restrict our body to culturally acceptable movements and expressions and to develop our intellect as the primary consciousness through which we experience life. This restriction of the body’s spontaneity limits its natural expression and access to libido – and, as a consequence, the expression of feelings and passions becomes more difficult. Often, this manifests as psycho-spiritual and physical blockages that may ultimately compromise our full participation in Life: we may feel that we have ‘lost our way’… that our lives are meaningless and empty. We may struggle to move through the transitions and stages of Life. And we may find ourselves caught in cycles of dis-ease or physical impairment through an inhibition of the body’s innate ability to self-heal.
However, if we can allow our minds to surrender their need to control the body, our bodies will begin once again to express spontaneous, natural movements and stretches that release blockages and open pathways for the free flow and expression of libido. Often, this unrestricted expression of libido includes the passionate vocalization of authentic sound…sounds that spontaneously become evocative songs that the body already knows: songs of praise…songs of love…songs of sensuality…songs of experience…songs of self-healing…allowing the individual the possibility of expressing a more natural and radiant wellbeing.
When one sings and dances the unique songs their body knows, a connection to the rhythm and energy of Life is re-established…and a sense of true belonging…a true sense of Self… …begins to awaken. And - within this Awakened Self – lies unexplored, innate capacities for transformation and self-healing…as well as unimagined capacities to induct healing and transformational states in service to the wellbeing of others.
